Mebyon Kernow condemn South East Cornwall car park charges to meet 'fanciful' income target by Cornwall Council
Mebyon Kernow - The Party For Cornwall, has today condemned the decision by Cornwall Council's cabinet to increase Car Parking charges across South East Cornwall as being damaging to Town Centres.

Cllr Andrew Long, the party's economy spokesperson and Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for South East Cornwall was talking after Tuesday's Cabinet where he challenged the portfolio holder on the estimates of the income.

"Since Cornwall Council was formed in 2009 the Council has set six targets for Car Park income not just here in the South East but across the Duchy and in every year we have failed spectacularly to meet them.  Instead, the punitive charges have damaged the town centres and this years increase and target is no exception." said Cllr Long.

"Despite promising otherwise, The Council consider the car parks in South East Cornwall, especially Callington, Liskeard, Looe, Saltash and Torpoint as 'Cash Cows' in filling gaps in funding of public services caused by the severe cuts from central government.  Last year I asked for, and thought we would get, a change in emphasis on Car parks where any income was a dividend which could be used for improvements but still we have this desperate attempt to balance the budget from car parks where we have little control over how many people might use them.  So when the budgeted income is not met, the other part of the directorate will have to take the hit.  This is clearly unacceptable." he added.

Car Parking charges are going up across South East Cornwall in April with first hour charges being particularly badly hit.
