Westminster parties are failing Cornwall on devolution
Four parliamentary candidates from Mebyon Kernow have slammed the three largest Westminster parties for refusing to back meaningful devolution to Cornwall. In a statement issued today, the PPCs have criticized the Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat parties for their “abject lack of ambition for the historic nation of Cornwall.”

The joint statement from Cllr Loveday Jenkin (Camborne and Redruth), Cllr Andrew Long (South East Cornwall), Cllr Stephen Richardson (Truro and Falmouth) and Cllr Rob Simmons (St Ives) was as follows:

“The recent Scottish independence vote – and the promise of more powers to Scotland – has opened up a key debate about the future of the whole UK.

“But it is clear that the three largest Westminster parties have little interest in delivering meaningful devolution west of the Tamar.

“It is extremely disappointing that prominent members of the Conservative and Labour Parties are already publicly opposing the creation of a Cornish Assembly.

“And it is also disappointing that the Liberal Democrats supposed support for a Cornish Assembly appears to be confused, and reflect a desire for powers for local government, rather than proper democratic control over the majority of the public sector in Cornwall.

“It our belief that this abject lack of ambition for the historic nation of Cornwall is unforgivable.

“We should be seeking the very best for Cornwall – not what is second-best or third-rate.”

The four parliamentary candidates from Mebyon Kernow have also appealed to people of all political persuasions to throw their weight behind the campaign for democratic devolution to Cornwall through a Cornish Assembly.

In particular, they have appealed to those members of the three largest Westminster parties – disillusioned with their parties’ lack of support for greater self-government for Cornwall – to shift their allegiance to MK.

Speaking on behalf of MK, Cllr Loveday Jenkin (Camborne and Redruth) said:

“I am pleased to be able to announce that any existing, card-carrying, member of one of the Westminster parties – who wishes to defect to MK and show their support for the campaign for a Cornish Assembly – will be welcomed with twelve months free membership.”
