Fantastic news: Cornish granted National Minority status
Mebyon Kernow – the Party for Cornwall has welcomed the Government’s announcement that the Cornish people will hereafter be recognised as a National Minority through the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities.

The announcement will be made later today by the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, who has announced that the Cornish “will be fully recognised under European rules for the protection of national minorities.”
 
Speaking on behalf of Mebyon Kernow, Party Leader Cllr Dick Cole said:
 
“This is a fantastic announcement for Cornwall. I am absolutely delighted that the Government has recognised the Cornish people as a National Minority and it is great to see that all the Celtic peoples of these Islands – the Cornish, Irish, Scottish and Welsh – are now afforded equal protection under the Framework Convention.
 
“People have been campaigning on this issue for over fifteen years and I would like to pay a heartfelt tribute to everyone who played a part in the long running fight to secure National Minority status.”

The leader of Mebyon Kernow has re-affirmed his call for Cornwall to be able to decide its own policies for planning and housing. Cllr Dick Cole’s latest intervention came after the UK Government launched a consultation on plans to “boost housing supply,” which includes the introduction of a “standard method for calculating local authorities’ housing need.”
