Mebyon Kernow slams sell-off of “hospital services”
Mebyon Kernow’s prospective parliamentary candidate for Camborne, Redruth and Hayle, Mike Champion has condemned the decision of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust (RCHT) to privatise over 450 “hospital services” jobs in the Cornish NHS.

Mebyon Kernow is opposed to the privatisation of hospital services

MK understands that the jobs which would be transferred to private companies include catering, cleaning, portering, and the hospital switchboard.

Cllr Champion, who is the present Mayor of Camborne, said:

“I am furious that the Board has taken this decision. Time after time, privatisation has been demonstrated to put profit before people. This is the wrong decision, both for the patients and the workforce. Privatisation will inevitably lead to falling standards of care for the patients, plus job losses and an erosion of pay and working conditions for staff.

“I understand that both Serco and G4S are in the running. Both these companies have, in my opinion, shown themselves to be unfit to hold contracts in public organisations. Recent shambles over contracts held by these companies in the public sector show there is no way that they should be allowed anywhere near services on which the general public depend.

“I call on people to write to their councilors, MPs and the press expressing their outrage at this monumental threat to the Cornish healthcare system.”

A recent poll showed that 75% of people questioned were opposed to further privatisation of the NHS.
