MK Members:

THREE MK COUNCILLORS ELECTED TO COUNTY HALL

Mebyon Kernow out-polls the Labour Party and range of other parties

Mebyon Kernow – the Party for Cornwall is celebrating the election of three councillors to serve on the new Cornwall Council.

Standing in 33 divisions (27% of the total), Mebyon Kernow polled 7,290 votes. This was more than the Labour Party whose 59 candidates collectively managed only 5,698 votes.

The three successful candidates were Dick Cole (St Enoder), Stuart Cullimore (Camborne South) and Andrew Long (Callington).

Party Leader Dick Cole out-polled Conservative and Liberal Democrat opponents in the St Enoder Division with 78% of the votes cast - the highest percentage share of any candidate standing for election to the new Council.

Andrew Long in Callington polled 54% of the vote in the Callington Division to defeat Conservative and Liberal Democrat opponents, while Stuart Cullimore was successful in Camborne South by a majority of 20 votes. He outpolled Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat opponents and a sitting county councillor who was standing as an independent.

MK also achieved a number of credible results including second places in Camborne West (Mike Champion), Liskeard North (Roger Holmes), Newlyn and Mousehole (Simon Reed), Troon and Beacon (Alan Sanders) and Wendron (Loveday Jenkin).

Alan Sanders missed out by only 42 votes while Loveday Jenkin polled well in spite of her home parish of Crowan being divided in the incomplete boundary review which devised the boundaries for the June 4th contest.

Commenting on the results, Party Leader Cllr Dick Cole said:

“It is an important breakthrough for Mebyon Kernow – the Party for Cornwall to be represented at County Hall. Our councillors are committed to working hard at the heart of local government in Cornwall and we will do our utmost to repay the faith placed in us by local communities.”

With no political party or group in overall control of the new Cornwall Council, Cllr Cole has called on everyone to work together for Cornwall for the next four years.

“It is our hope that the Conservative and Liberal Democrat groups and the independent councillors will work together to form an inclusive administration for the betterment of Cornwall” he said.

“The three MK councillors are committed to playing our part in the Council as much as possible.”
